NWU spokesperson, Louis Jacobs, says the decision comes after students disrupted activities on the Mafikeng Campus yesterday.
He says protesting students clashed with police outside the main entrance and after attempts by police to disperse the group they entered the campus again. Police used rubber rounds and teargas after being continuously pelted with stones.
Jacobs says the situation is calm on the campus this morning. However, he says about 300 students are protesting outside the main entrance of the Vaal Triangle Campus. Motorists are also advised to avoid Hendrik van Eck Boulevard.
He says the decision to close the two campuses was made in an effort to safeguard other students and staff.
More information regarding the closure of the two campuses for the rest week will be communicated through out the day. No interruptions have taken place on the Potchefstroom Campus so far. – Christal-Lize Muller
