Another gruesome murder of a girl was reported in Central South Africa amidst the 16 Days of Activism against gender-based violence campaign.

The police in the North West discovered the body of an 18-year-old girl at Ramosadi Village in front of Molema Primary School, Mmabatho, on Sunday 1 December.

Police spokesperson, Aefje Botma, says according to information residents found the victim bleeding and she informed them that she was raped and stabbed several times in the upper body.

Botma says further information indicates that while residents were still waiting for an ambulance, they noticed that the victim was set alight and there was a 5-litre container of petrol next to her. Meanwhile, Botma tells OFM News that a 19-year-old suspect was on Monday 2 December arrested and is expected to appear in court on Wednesday.

Botma says the victim was discovered at about 04:00 am. “The victim was allegedly on her way from a tavern when she was approached by a man. Community members heard the victim scream and when they came out, they allegedly found the victim bleeding and she informed them that the suspect raped and stabbed her several times in the upper body,” Botma says.

“As the members of the community went to the tarred road to wait for the ambulance, they again heard the victim scream and saw a fire. On arrival, they noticed that the victim was set alight and there was a 5-litre container of petrol next to her.”

In a similar incident, the Naledi Lethoba murder case was referred by the Welkom Local Magistrate’s Court to the Free State High Court on Monday 2 December. The trial of the murder case against Obed Leshoro, who is said to be Lethoba’s boyfriend, will now commence on 9 January 2020. This referral comes just days after the discovery of an unknown woman’s naked body in Namibia township in Bloemfontein over the weekend.
