The safety of off-campus student accommodation in Bloemfontein is under the spotlight, following another case of aggravated robbery.

University of the Free state Student Representative Council (SRC) President, Asive Dlanjwa, says there have been numerous student house robberies over the last year, with the latest being a student house robbery that took place at Universitas, Bloemfontein in the early hours of Saturday morning. OFM News received information from students who were held at gunpoint, with one of them being shot.

“A student who prefers to remain anonymous told OFM News seven of them were held at gunpoint while burglars were searching for valuables in their rooms. He says six cellphones, five laptops, and clothes were taken. When the suspects ran out, they shot one of the tenants in the stomach. He says they also locked some of the students in the bedrooms. The tenant was rushed to hospital and a case was opened at the Park Road Police Station,” says OFM News’ Josca Human.

Meanwhile, Police spokesperson, Wendy Nkabi, says they will be responding at a later stage. Dlanjwa says over 80% of University of the Free State (UFS) students live off-campus.

“We are campaigning for student safety and security for the communes in which they stay, which speaks to the labour standards. One of the things we are pushing for is the accreditation of off-campus accommodation for students so that they meet a particular standard,” says Dlanjwa.
