On 6 October 2020 police seized drugs with an estimated street value of R255 400 after following up on information about drugs at a residence in Ariel Street, Bedelia, Welkom. Members of the Welkom K9 and Crime Intelligence Counter Narcotics Unit confiscated Crystal Methamphetamine (Tik) weighing 115 grams and CAT of about 698 grams
after searching the premises where the drugs were found. Upon arrival, they found a 29-year-old female whom they later also arrested.
Whilst busy searching for narcotics, a suspect driving a white Audi A3 arrived on the scene. According to Police Spokesperson Brigadier Motantsi Makhele, the suspect noticed police being present and drove away at high speed whereupon members of the police gave chase while at the same time mobilizing other units for assistance.
“A high speed pursuit ensued from Bedelia to Odendaalsrus, back to Riebeeckstad, Thabong on Erfdeel Road, with the suspect refusing to stop. While in Jason members formed a road block to stop the suspect but he did not want to give up. Instead he drove through the road block disregarding the safety of other road users and members. Pursuit continued again. However, the high performance motor vehicles of security companies assisted to corner the suspect at the corner of Jason and Koppie Aleen Streets near Bundu Lodge,” said Makhele.
The 29-year-old suspected driver was later arrested for reckless driving, attempted murder, defeating the ends of justice and dealing in drugs. His vehicle was also confiscated for being used in the commission of an offence.
The couple will be charged to appear at Welkom Magistrate’s Court in due course.
