Not all planned projects receive funding

Various governmental projects without a credible feasibility study will not be funded by the department of treasury.

This is according to the Free State treasury director of budget management, Pakiso Lebona. He said even though they might be good projects, they will be rejected. Lebona was speaking at the budget media workshop that was held in Bloemfontein ahead of the budget speech address.

The MEC of treasury, Elzabe Rockman, will address this year’s provincial budget next week in Bloemfontein. Lebona explained the purpose of the Medium Term Expenditure Committee (MTEC) in the budget process.

“Departments are given opportunity to present their budget and in turn, treasury looks at numerous things. Among others it could be on the trade-offs that the departments have made, reprioritisation and credible implementation plans together with the capacity to implement whatever they are intending to do in the upcoming financial year,” he said.

The media was provided with an overview of the budget process. Lebone added that the proposals from the provincial treasury will then be sent to the Exco Lekgotla where a final decision will be made.
