The Mangaung Metro Municipality says the non-payment of municipal workers and councillors’ salaries was due to a technical error.

The municipal spokesperson, Qondile Khedama says the delay to pay workers’ salaries was caused by a technical error, however, the matter is being attended to.

EFF councillor, Baba Sebolao, earlier told OFM News that they were surprised as to why they did not receive their salaries in due time despite being on a legal strike.

The South African Municipal Workers’ Union (SAMWU) in Mangaung have been on a full blown strike for more than two weeks and have stated that they will not go back to works until their demands are met.

Khedama says the municipality has made the payment and can assure the employees that in the future they will be paid in due time. He, however, said the municipality cannot comment on the on-going strike as they are still in talks.

“In any institution or any environment you would at some point encounter technical glitches and I view this as one of them, but the good thing is that we have tried to alert our employees, but they have since been paid. We are happy that the system is up and rolling.”

The demands of the workers on strike includes amongst others non-payment of salaries to temporary workers for the month of April until to date, salary increment, cessation of daily political interference in the administration of the municipality, nepotism, and the absorption of all temporary workers who have being in the system for more than three months.
