After 1086kms on foot, 86kms more than expected, the four no student hungry campaign walkers finally reached their destination yesterday afternoon. The walkers started their journey from Bloemfontein to Cape Town on 1 May and reached Cape Town after 33 days on 2 June.
“It is amazing. The weather was wonderful. We really had a bad day on Sunday, it was raining and it was windy. We had to walk with wet takkies all the way. We actually did not know if it was going to dry up. When we started walking on Monday morning it was still raining but as we got closer to our destination, the skies just opened up and the sun came out. It was wonderful arriving at the beach. It was so special”, said one of the walkers and University of the Free State (UFS) employee, Adéle van Aswegen.
The walkers, two employees from UFS, Adéle van Aswegen and Ntokozo Nkabinde, together with two other Bloemfontein residents, Nico Piedt and Ronel Warner, did the walk in order to highlight the problem of food insecurity among students and to raise funds for the UFS No Student Hungry Campaign.
The group is now looking forward to returning home on Wednesday. They have urged people who still want to get involved to sms the word ‘answer’ to 38722.
