No court date has yet been set for two Mangaung Correctional Centre inmates who held a doctor hostage for 20 hours this week. Police spokesperson Thandi Mbambo says a requisition still needs to be made to the head of the prison to establish a date when the prisoners will be available for a court appearance. The two inmates were arrested yesterday morning when the police’s tactical response team arrested the two suspects. Provincial police commissioner, Khehla Sitole, yesterday said it seemed the two prisoners’ demands were part of a bigger escape plan. Other prisoners who started a fire on Monday night as a suspected diversion tactic were also charged with arson. The doctor was unharmed, but may need treatment for shock and trauma.
