The 21-year-old Wilco Nienaber from Bloemfontein will tee it up in a World Golf Championship event for the first time in his career this week.
Nienaber is in Memphis, Tennessee along with the Bloemfontein Golf Club coach, Quintin Williams, for the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational at TPC Southwind.
A total of 48 of the world’s top 50 golfers will be playing this week and they include the fellow South Africans Louis Oosthuizen and Garrick Higgo.
Williams told Bloemfontein Courant that so far all is going well in Memphis.
“We are both doing very well. I got here last week Tuesday, so we’ve had a week of practise and just to have a bit of time to sharpen up some areas of his game, and to make sure that he can pull off the right shots at the right time.
“He’s very excited, especially to have the opportunity to play against the best players in the world, so we are looking forward to the week ahead.”
Nienaber qualified by winning the 2021 Dimension Data Pro-Am at Fancourt in George.
