News of Magashule’s arrest is fake news

Responding to questions on whether Secretary-General of the ANC, Ace Magashule, has been arrested, National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson, Phaladi Shuping said: “That is just fake news. Fake news on steroids.” A WhatsApp voice note, which began circulating over the weekend, stated that Magashule was arrested in Cape Town on Sunday, however, various sources have confirmed this to be fake news. Spokesperson of the Hawks in the Free State, S’fiso Nyakane, said he did not know anything about the allegations and also said “If it was us, I should have known.” While police spokespersons, Hlubi Ikobeng, Chaka Marope as well as Thandi Mbambo referred Bloemfontein Courant to the Hawks as they also said they did not have information regarding the allegations. Magashule’s spokesperson, Tiisetso Makhele, also confirmed that he did not know anything about the matter, while ANC spokespersons Pule Mabe (national) and Thabo Meeko (Free State) could not be reached for comment on the matter.
