New UFS Rector wants affordable higher education

The new Vice-Chancellor and Rector at the University of the Free State (UFS) says a culture change is needed if inclusivity is to be achieved at the university.

Professor Francis Petersen told Bloemfontein Courant that an integrated transformation framework has been approved by the council of the university.

Petersen further views engagement with different stakeholders and the issue of free higher education as some of the bigger challenges. He says affordable higher education should be a priority.

“Accessible and affordable higher education is something which we must aim for. The fees must fall arguments for that is a valid argument and I fully support that. We will have to work towards that approach with the government, the Department of Higher Education, and National Treasury. We must ensure that everybody has access to higher education,” says Petersen.

Petersen succeeds Jonathan Jansen, who stepped down in August 2016.
