The Central University of Technology, Free State, has recently embarked on a journey to revamp the ancient structure of the unique historical building on the premises which houses its popular Hotel School. The renovation of the building, which dates back to 1912, included the installation of a glass roof above the courtyard.

According to Jaydee Snyman, Operational Manager at the Hotel School, routine maintenance and continuous upgrading is of vital importance to preserve and extend the lifespan of this unique building.

Snyman explained to Bloemfontein Courant that the whole project has been on the cards since 2016 and included a new roof, which was completed in June 2021. She added that the new roof is unique in so many ways because it is not only equipped with state-of-the-art lighting features but also a centralised temperature control system that is amazing for such a large space.

“The whole process, from start to finish, consisted of so much detail and planning and to have witnessed this first-hand was really a privilege. The architect, Hennie Lambrechts, conducted a research programme and did a detailed survey of the Republican-style building to identify areas of concern. He restored this beautiful building of ours by protecting the multi-functional courtyard area against extreme weather conditions by installing a cost- and energy- efficient glass roof structure,” she said.

According to Lambrechts, principal agent for Hennie Lambrechts Architects, the existing courtyard is a unique feature of historical significance, a rare example of an architectural enclosure still in existence and in use. “The protection of this multi-functional space during adverse weather conditions determines its value.”

Snyman said they strive to educate and train students at the Hotel School to be
the best industry leaders of the future and teach them everything there is to know about the industry, an industry which offers their internal and external clients something unique.

“We appreciate the support we receive from our corporate clients and community as they assist us by investing in the education of our youth every time they book a function with us or join us at our One on Park Restaurant.”
