Due to a lack of funds the New Brighton dancers could not join the other eight provinces to visit England for the World Lyrical Dance Championships that were held at Stratford Upon Avon recently.
But instead of sitting around moping, they used their energy to focus on the Euro Dance Championships that were held at the Roodepoort Civic Theatre on 29 July 2019. Their perseverance paid off when they qualified once again to represent South Africa, both in Serbia in November 2019 and in Croatia in April 2020.
The talented dancers of New Brighton Dance School walked away with a total number of 40 gold medals and 7 silver medals. They also won special awards by being crowned the overall best dance group in the contemporary category as well as the best trio, which was won by the two teachers, Tshiamo Ramabodu and Pule Paul Peter, as well as the senior dancer, Lesego Tsikang.
On Saturday 3 August 2019 the competitive dance school also took part in a provincial competition held at the North West University by the South African Dance Foundation, where they excelled in genres such as freestyle disco and hip hop by obtaining the highest podium calls for positions between number 1 and 3.
“Even though the school did not have enough time to prepare for both competitions, the kids did well and really showed a high level of showmanship, maturity and growth,” said the school principal, Tshepiso Khumalo.
In spite of their success in these competitions, they are still in need of funds for both trips to Europe. “We humbly call on all members of the community, businesses and the government to assist these future stars,” pleaded Khumalo.
