NC Education department mourns the death of two employees

The Department of Education in the Northern Cape is mourning the death of two of its employees who were murdered in De Aar at the weekend.

Education spokesperson, Geoffrey van der Merwe, says it is a sad time for the department after Glenwill Makaleni and his wife Gladys, who were both employed at the department’s regional office in the Pixley Ka Seme District in De Aar, were stabbed to death while sleeping in their home. The couple’s 10-year-old son, Gladwill, also known as Winston, was also murdered.

Van der Merwe says Glenwill was responsible for performance management at the regional office while Gladys worked in the department’s HR unit.

“It is a difficult time. The MEC of Education in the Northern Cape, Martha Bartlett, will visit the family of the deceased tomorrow. Arrangements for a memorial service will be made.”

A 18-year-old was arrested in connection with the murders yesterday. He is expected to appear in court soon.  – Christal-Lize Muller
