Dr Dion George, Minister of Forestry, Fisheries, and the Environment, emphasised that National Parks Week serves as a reminder of South Africa’s rich shared heritage and diverse landscapes. This year, National Parks Week takes place from Monday 9 September to Sunday 15 September.
“We celebrate the deep and lasting connection between South Africans and the natural world that surrounds us,” George said. “South African National Parks Week is about fostering that connection by inviting everyone to experience the wonders that these parks have to offer free of charge.”
South Africa boasts a network of 21 national parks, each managed by SANParks.
The minister said that national parks belong to all South Africans, urging everyone to share the responsibility of protecting and preserving them for future generations.
“Now in its 19th year, National Parks Week has become a powerful platform to showcase the invaluable natural and cultural treasures we hold. By offering free access, SANParks is extending an open hand to all South Africans in order to foster a deeper appreciation for the rich biodiversity and historical significance found within our parks,” the minister said.
“As we reflect on the importance of the National Parks Week and our shared responsibility, it is equally important to look ahead. Our vision for South Africa’s national parks cannot be limited to conservation, it must extend to revitalisation and growth.”
The annual South African National Parks Week provides all South Africans with the opportunity to explore the country’s national parks free of charge. This initiative not only strengthens the connection between South Africa’s parks system and the global national parks movement but also highlights the beauty and diversity of the nation’s natural landscapes.
During this week, day visitors, especially those from local communities, can enjoy complimentary access to most of the 21 national parks. However, it’s important to note that free entry excludes accommodation and additional tourist activities.
