A fire which started in the roof of the main kitchen at the National Hospital in Bloemfontein today was put out a few minutes ago by the Mangaung Fire Department.

According to the CEO of the National Hospital, Dr. Mahmoud Malek, the smoke spread to the adjacent out-patient building at around 13:45. The building was immediately evacuated.

Six young patients who were in a ward close to the kitchen, will be transported to the Pelonomi Hospital to ensure their safety.

The Free State Health Department says in a statement the fire, which started in the kitchen area, quickly spread to other parts of the monumental National Hospital in Bloemfontein. The source of the fire and the extent of the damages is not yet known.

The MEC for Health, Butana Komphela, has applauded the swift reaction by the CEO, who ensured that the safety of patients is prioritised while the Emergency Services and Fire & Rescue teams work tirelessly to put down the fire.

The electrical wiring of the building will be checked and investigations will follow to determine the cause of fire.
