Nine people were killed, three sustained minor injuries and two others escaped with no injuries, after a horrendous taxi accident that happened earlier today on the N1 between Xhariep Dam and the Orange River bridge.
MEC for the Department of Police, Roads and Transport, Sam Mashinini, expressed his condolences to the loved ones of the deceased in a media statement earlier today.
“It is with great sadness that I extend my deepest condolences to the families who lost loved ones on our roads. It is indeed sad, as some have lost mothers, sisters, and aunts; as all the deceased are women.
“I hereby wish that the families find comfort during this sombre time. I would also like to wish the injured a speedy recovery,” said Mashinini.
It is alleged that the taxi driver was trying to avoid a porcupine on the road, but lost control and the taxi overturned.
