The Bloemfontein Life Change Centre is a collaborative effort between the Odeion School of Music (University of Free State) and the Bloemfontein Life Change Centre in Heidedal and the VGK Heatherdale.

The music school of the Bloemfontein Life Change Centre Music School (BLCC) provides musical tuition on all brass instruments as well as music theory to the community of Heidedal and surrounding areas. They will be having their last day of auditions on Thursday, 4 March 2021.

“The Bloemfontein Life Change Centre is a collaborative effort between the Odeion School of Music (University of Free State) and the Bloemfontein Life Change Centre in Heidedal and the VGK Heatherdale,” said Tursney Human, teacher and assistant at BLCC.

She added that as part of the music school, students are given the opportunity to learn how to play a brass instrument together with the necessary music theory. The ensembles perform regularly at Eisteddfods, community concerts, church functions and concerts at the Odeion Hall (UFS). “Since 2019, students have also been entered in graded music examinations.

Thus far, several students who have entered the examinations have passed with flying colours. We hope to enrol a few more students for these exams later this year.”
Human said the school was established at the request of Rev. Zack Pienaar who wanted a music school component at the centre.

In line with the mission of the BLCC, the school provides instrumental tuition on brass instruments to all members of the community in an effort to provide a positive influence and a creative outlet and to provide the youth with a unique skill set.

“We offer tuition on brass instruments (trumpet, trombone, French horn, euphonium, and tuba), as well as the required music theory,” Human told Bloemfontein Courant. “For those individuals who want to start learning an instrument from scratch, there are no audition requirements. We simply show the students how to make a sound on the brass instruments and test which instrument (trumpet, euphonium, trombone, or tuba) is best suited to them. Those who can already play, are asked to demonstrate their abilities by playing one or two pieces.”

The minimum age for enrolment is 9 years, or when kids are able to read, write and communicate easily.

The final round of auditions will be held on 4 March from 16:30 to 19:00 at the Bloemfontein Life Change Centre on the premises of the VGK Heatherdale (use the Brookes Avenue entrance). Interested parties must please contact Tursney Human 060-316-6032 to book a slot.
