The Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality is in mourning after one of its ward councillors. Tshepo “Lechoba” Motsumi passed away on Tuesday morning.

Executive Mayor of the municipality, Olly Mlamleli. took to her Facebook page to inform the public of her colleague’s passing as well as to express her condolences on his passing.

“Cllr Tshepo was a ward councillor of Ward 12 who served his people with dedication and utmost commitment”, she said in the post.

She also added that he was a champion of accelerated service delivery within his ward. To him, putting the people of his ward first, filled his soul with joy.

Mlamleli said his death is a loss to the Metro and hopes his family is comforted in this time. The exact details surrounding his death are not yet clear, although, he was reportedly suffering from an illness.

Municipal spokesperson, Qondile Khedama, could not provide answers to questions Bloemfontein Courant posed to him, as he was in a meeting.

Motsumi is the second ANC ward councilor to pass away in recent months after Tankiso Moea from Thaba Nchu’s ward 39 passed away last year. Moea’s ward was contested in a by-election, which was retained by the ANC after Nozenza Cezula replaced Moea as the new councillor, winning by 45.29% of the 5 379 votes cast.

Motsumi’s death comes five days after he celebrated his birthday on 20 July, making him forty-eight years old. Details on his funeral and memorial will be communicated in due course. – Pulane Choane
