Municipal councillors need to be on par with local government issues

Municipal councillors need to be on par with issues regarding local government as the world becomes more sophisticated.

This is according to the National Chairperson of the South African Local Government Association (Salga), Thabo Manyoni.

His statement was in reference to the induction programme for the newly elected councillors who started with induction on Monday.

Speaking at a media briefing in Bloemfontein, Manyoni described local government as a highly complex environment that needed individuals who would be ready for the challenge.

“Local government is a complex environment in the sense that it is handling a merit of legislation and diverse issues like sanitation, energy, transport, basic needs of our people and even matters that are not necessarily for local government in terms of legislation. Local government is also highly regulated and legislated, from Basic Legislation Systems Act, Structures Act, Municipal Finance Management Act, among others. Actually, almost all laws of the country have an impact on local government.”
