Mountain bikers from across the country tamed the super technical Happy Valley course in Bloemfontein during the 2018 SA XCO MTB Championships on Saturday.

The 2018 Commonwealth Games bronze medallist, Alan Hatherly, and Mariska Strauss defended their national titles in the men’s and women’s elite section, which they won at the Mankele MTB Park, Nelspruit, a year ago. Arno du Toit who rides for the Free State claimed an awesome third in the highly competitive men’s elite race.

On a local front, the 15-year-old, Chanté Olivier, delivered another dominant and inspiring performance to claim the Youth Women’s title in more than five minutes faster than he nearest competitor, Joné van Eeden.

The men’s veterans race was won by the former World and multiple Cape Epic champion, Nico Pfitzenmaier of Germany, and this despite sustaining a serious rib injury during training the previous evening. In the men’s masters, Bloemfontein’s Dirk Maarsingh earned a very respectable second in what a was very entertaining race. – MORGAN PIEK
