A mother and son were shot dead at their home in Thaba Nchu in the Free State, police said on Wednesday.
Police spokesperson Sergeant Martin Xuma said in a statement that two men stormed the mother’s house with rifles and opened fire, hitting the 56-year-old in her stomach and arm as she was preparing supper on Monday evening.
“A 27-year-old son went into the kitchen to look who was shooting and met the two armed men. The son was shot on his neck and the two armed men fled on foot. A neighbour heard the gunshots and alerted the police.”
Both victims were declared dead on the scene.
Police found three bullet holes in the bedroom wall and eleven empty cartridges. A six-year-old boy survived the attack by hiding under the table.
