The defence for former Motheo College accountant Jacques Wilhelm Grobler says the money his client stole was not the only reason for the institution’s financial woes.
Arguing in mitigation of sentence, Grobler’s defence said the R1,3-million stolen by his client is only a fraction of the unexplained shortfall of R23-million, which has been confirmed by Motheo’s principal. He says Grobler can therefore not be solely blamed for problems at the college.
Thirty-seven-year-old Grobler was last month convicted on sixty counts of fraud and theft relating to funds he stole from the college between April 2009 and March 2011.
Sentencing proceedings were postponed to Friday 13 September following a request by the defense.
