The police in Vryheid are investigating a case of malicious damage to property after 51 vehicles at a police pound, were burnt beyond recognition recently.
The cost of the damage is estimated to be around R2 350 000.
Zululand Cluster Police spokesperson, Captain Nkosie Gwala, said that 32 broken down police vehicles and 19 vehicles that were kept in the police pound as exhibits for pending cases, were completely destroyed.
According to Captain Gwala, a witness, who was the security guard on duty, said he noticed thick smoke coming from the other side of the pound.
A case of malicious damage to property was opened for investigation, but no arrest has been made at this stage.
