Moqhaka strike continues

Duane Petrus – Employees at the Moqhaka Local Municipality in Kroonstad have still not reported for duty since they started protesting last month.
40 employees were served with dismissal letters last week after they were identified on camera footage forcefully removing the municipal manager from his office.
The spokesperson of the striking staff, Morena Thebe, says their labour unions are in the process of challenging these dismissals because they feel the correct procedures were not followed.
Cogta’s head of department, Moketi Duma, said the employees were warned, prior to these dismissals, that further action would be taken if they do not report for duty.
They have accused the municipal manager, Simon Mqwathi, of irregularities and have called for his suspension.
