Monday Nights Varsity Sports game set to break SA Records
The third athletics meeting of the Varsity Athletics programme is scheduled to set Stellenbosch alight on Monday, 21st April 2014.

The following top athletes will be participating in Monday night’s game:

Zarck Visser, UJ; leading the world stage with a 8.31m in the long jump for men.

Orazio Cremona, UP-Tuks; With his current record of 20.63 in Varsity Athletics’ men’s shot put, this is the second best distance ever by any South African

Akani Simbini, UP-Tuks; With a time of 10.02, Simbini broke the SA record for the 100 meter run for Tuks in men’s 4 x 100 relay.

UP-Tuks’s recent men’s relay event at UJ,
saw them finish in a time of 39.5, the fastest time ever by any team in South African history that is not an official South African team.

Henrico Bruintjies, UP-Tuks; His time of 10.17 this past Monday is the 10th best in the history of SA. He also competed for Tuks in the 4 x 100m.

Rikinette Steenkamp, UP-Tuks; Her time of 13:17 in the 100m hurdles is the best in 23 years in SA.

Geraldine Duvenhage, NWU-Pukke; Discus thrower, just one metre short of a SA junior record.

Justine Palframan, Maties; Currently the 200m and 400m SA champion will compete on her home track in the 400m women’s event.

Should UP-Tuks finish in first place on Monday night, it could prove enough to see them capture the overall title. With their current performance, especially across the sprint and relay track events, it could very well be them ending in first place come Monday night.

However, NWU-Pukke looms close behind in second place with a chance to still steal the crown away from UP-Tuks. Here are the current standings after the recent Varsity Athletics events at NMMU and UJ:

1. UP Tuks -18 points

2. NWU Puk – 14 points

3. UJ – 12 points

4. UFS Kovsies – 10 points

5. Maties -8 points

6. UWC -6 points

7. NMMU – 4 points

8. TUT -2 points

The event will be shown live on super sport channel 210 from 6pm to 8pm on Monday. Access is R 20 per person or free admission tickets are available from the website
