Moletfetsane Motlaung (Sasolburg AC) scored a surprise win with a tactical sound run at the Free State half marathon (21,1 km) championships in Welkom on Saturday.
Moletfetsane orchestrated a successful break away attempt from the rest of his challengers at approximately the 17-km mark to break the tape in a good inland time of 1:08:48.
The fact that the next five athletes finished slightly over a minute behind him, proved that the competition among Free State half marathon athletes is healthy and may come in handy in the team competition at the SA championships.
The Free State marathon champion, Godfrey Ramokone (Eskom AC, 1:09:16), finished 28 seconds adrift with Xolisa Gatju (CUT Welkom, 1:09,28) a mere 12 seconds behind Ramakone for his bronze medal.
The minor places were filled by Pule Hlabahlaba (Mangaung AC, 01:09,47) and Jonas Soke (CUT Welkom, 1:09:48) who crossed the line in fourth and fifth places respectively, both within a minute from the winner.
Anna Moeketsi (By Grace AC) was first Freestater to stop the clock with a time of 1:28:13 in the race for women, but was well beaten by the Lesotho athlete, Dikeledi Mejara (Stillwater Sibanye AC), who finished in a reasonable inland time of 1:25:00.
This means that Moeketsi will lead the Free State onslaught in the team competition at the national championships, as Mejara does not qualify to represent the province.
The bronze medal in Welkom went to Roselina Khambule (Stillwater Sibanye AC, 1:29:43) who finished 30 seconds behind Moeketsi.
Maryna Swanepoel (Eskom AC, 1:29:66) and Siphokasi Diko (Stilwater Sibanya, 1:29:58) finished in fourth and fifth places respectively and less than a minute behind Moeketsi. – RUFUS BOTHA
