Modern pentathlon championships to be held

The 2020 South African Modern Penthalon and Laser Run Championships will be hosted in Bloemfontein at Sentraal High School and the Free State Stadium swimming pool on 6, 7 and 8 March 2020.

David Abdelmalak, private fencing coach as well as head coach: Modern Pentathlon, SA Modern Pentathlon Association (Sampa), said the championships will be hosted at Sentraal High School where the fencing and laser run will take place while the swimming part will take place at the Free State Stadium swimming pool.

According to the official schedule provided by Abdelmalak, registration will take place from 15:00 to 16:00 at the staff room of Sentraal on Friday 6 March, while at the same time, a weapon check for fencing athletes will be held at the Sentraal Eeufees Hall. The opening ceremony of the championships will then take place from 16:00 to 16:30 in the Sentraal Eeufees Hall. The swimming event will also take place from 18:30 to 19:00 on the 6th at the Free State Stadium pool.

“We are expecting more than 500 people, including the chosen athletes and their families,” said Abdelmalak. The championships will start off with fencing from 08:00 to 12:00. Thereafter the Laser Run pentathlon/tetrathlon will take place from 14:00 to 16:30 on the Sentraal athletics track.

“On Sunday 8 March the championships will continue with registration for laser runners from 07:00 to 07:45 in the Eeufees Hall, the pistol check for the laser runners is also at 07:00 at the Sentraal athletics track and thereafter the day will kick-off with the Run shoot (Laser Run champs) from 08:00 to 12:00. The weekend’s events will be concluded with a ceremony where medals will be presented to the champions from 13:00 to 14:00 on the main athletics stand.

Abdelmalak mentioned that spectators will be more than welcome. There will be no charge.
