The Mangaung Metro Municipality has urged residents of the city to be extra cautious on the roads and at home. This after the South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued an Impact Based Warning Level 2.
The Level 2 alert is for possible severe thunderstorms with hail and strong damaging winds. According to the organisation disruptive rainfall is predicted for the Naledi region, whilst thunderstorms are predicted for the rest of Mangaung.
Municipal spokesperson, Qondile Khedama, said the warning is valid for Thursday, 30 September 2021 from 14:00 until 18:00. “The SAWS notice also states that the oncoming weather system is expected to result in stormy and rainy conditions over the central interior until Saturday 2 October,” said Khedama.
He has urged road users to be extra cautious while driving and to reduce speed and switch on headlights. He added that pedestrians should be careful when crossing the road and try to avoid crossing rivers and streams where water is above their ankles.
“We also urge households to open or create pathways to allow water to flow out of their yards,” concluded Khedama.
