The Mangaung Metro Municipality (MMM) is appealing to social media users to refrain from sharing unverified information, as it causes panic amongst members of the community.
This comes after false information was circulated about a stolen Mangaung Metro traffic vehicle. The message shows the vehicle’s registration plates and states that the vehicle was “falsely marked as a traffic vehicle”, which is not the case.
The city has now involved other law enforcement agencies to assist with investigations into the matter and to trace the originator of this misleading information.
According to a statement by the MMM, these allegations came to light after metro traffic officers confronted a reckless driver on Saturday, 12 September 2020. This resulted in the driver’s license being confiscated. He was subsequently instructed to report to the traffic offices.
“This also adds unnecessary strain on the burdened resources of our law enforcement agencies. Members of the community are urged to ignore this information,” reads MMM’s statement.
