The streets of Bloemfontein will be filled with men clad in their purple Speedos on Friday 16 March 2018 to raise awareness of male cancers such as prostate and testicular cancer.
This event, which is named the Hollard Daredevil Run, is a 5-kilometre run, which will see men of all ages, shapes and sizes in a bid to inform the public about the dangers of these male cancers and the stigmas surrounding them.
Since the event’s establishment in 2009, it will be held in the City of Roses for the first time.
The Fun Run will start at 15:00 and finish at the corner of Parfitt Avenue and Att Horak Street in front of the Bloemfontein Achilles Running Club, leading the daredevils past some of the city’s most popular attractions, including the Free State Rugby Stadium, the Loch Logan Waterfront and the Bloemfontein Zoo.
“I think we can all agree that cancer is a massive problem and that more needs to be done to raise awareness and encourage more men to get tested before it’s too late,” said Warwick Bloom, Group Marketing Manager at Hollard. “The Hollard Daredevil Run is unique in its playful approach to cancer awareness. We believe that uniting men in a light-hearted manner allows them to participate and relate to the cause. We want to educate and encourage open conversation, support for survivors, and, ultimately, regular testing to save more lives.”
Historically, the run takes place on a Friday afternoon, when the Speedo-clad runners are most visible to the public, to attract maximum awareness to this worthy initiative. Proceeds from the run will be donated to the Cancer Association of South Africa (Cansa) and the Prostate Cancer Association of South Africa to help fund cancer awareness programmes and testing across the country.
Men of any age are invited to participate in the run and can register now at or, from the 5th of March, register in person at the Cansa offices at 88 Melville Drive, Brandwag, between 09:00 and 15:00. Daredevil representatives will also be at the Bloemfontein Achilles Running Club until 14:00, for those who would like to sign up on the day of the run.
