South Africa is still a traumatised country and still has a long way to go before full reconciliation. Vice-Chancellor and Rector of University of Free State (UFS) Prof Jonathan Jansen said this at the launch of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation partnership with Trauma, Forgiveness and Reconciliation Studies at the UFS, led by Prof Pumla Gobodo-Madikizela.

Programme Director for International Higher Education and Strategic Projects at the foundation, Dr Saleem Badat, says the recently established five-year partnership entails that they support outstanding scholarship in the Arts and Humanities field of studies, among other criteria.

The American foundation approved R10million for Prof Gobodo-Madikizela’s project titled “Trauma, Memory and Representations of the Past: Transforming Scholarship in the Humanities and Arts.”

Jansen says the scholarship is special to the university because not only does it come from a prestigious foundation but also for the subject on which it will focus.
