The Free State Education MEC, Tate Makgoe, will be launching a vigorous campaign against racism, bullying, sexism and anti-social behaviour in schools at HTS Welkom this afternoon.
This crusade will first target former Model C schools in the province. The MEC and senior management of the department will kick-start the provincial campaign by meeting with the principals, deputy principals and school governing bodies of all the former Model C schools in the Lejweleputswa district.
Makgoe said with the help of their stakeholders, which include school management teams, school governing bodies, the South African Police Services, the Department of Social Development, and the Department of Health, they want to use this campaign to eradicate the scourge of subliminal and blatant racism, sexism, vandalism, assault, corporal punishment, sexual harassment, alcohol and drug abuse in schools. “This anti-social behaviour disrupts learning and teaching in our schools.”
The schools that the department will first give attention to is Wessels Maree Secondary School, Dagbreek Primary School and Bothaville Secondary school. Wessels Maree Secondary School was recently in the news after a video of a teacher violently pushing a learner in class went viral on social media.
