Free State Finance MEC, Gadija Brown, who celebrated her birthday on 2 January 2021, decided to spend her day by helping girls in need.

MEC Brown, who is a known activist, has a fond love for community development, especially when it concerns women’s issues. According to spokesperson, Andrew Visagie, MEC Brown decided to celebrate her birthday in a way that will benefit young ladies from her constituency, Heidedal.

Brown took hands with renowned radio presenter on Metro FM, Lerato Kganyago for this project where 500 females from Heidedal, through five non-profit organisations, benefited from the day.

Visagie told Bloemfontein Courant that sanitary pads are an essential commodity used by women on a daily basis and more than often young girls from underprivileged backgrounds are inconvenienced by their inability to afford sanitary pads.

“The MEC thus saw it fit to provide sanitary pads to five different NGOs of Heidedal who work within their community and who understand the socio-economic challenges of every household. They decided to empower these young girls in need by providing them with sanitary pads,” said Visagie.

The day was celebrated under the theme “Sanitary pads are not a choice but a daily essential”.

Visagie concluded by saying said that Saturday’s initiative was just the beginning of bigger initiatives to come in the not so distant future.
