Chaos reigns at the Maseru border post at Ladybrand this morning after it has been closed for traffic since noon yesterday. The police say the border post is blocked with heavy traffic piling up on the South African side of the border post.
Long queues of trucks and taxis are blocking the road. An informed police officer says it is much quieter on the Lesotho side as people of which most are South African citizens employed in Lesotho had to turn back yesterday afternoon because they were denied access to South Africa.
Coordinator of the Border Control Operational Coordinating Committee (BCOCC), Lieb Venter, did not elaborate yesterday on the reason behind the closure but indicated that taxi drivers are involved. He said however high level negotiations are taking place in an effort to re-open the border post.
People are able to cross on foot but no vehicles are allowed through. Motorist are advised to use the Ficksburg border post as an alternative.
Rumors of the closure of the border post at Ficksburg and Wepener have not yet been confirmed.
