A manhunt is underway for the alleged killers of a Bloemfontein man during a fatal shooting at the Preller Square shopping centre this afternoon.

Minutes after the shooting at around 16:00, a police helicopter was already circling over Bloemfontein, presumably in search of the three alleged killers.

According to bystanders the gunmen left the scene in a car that was parked in the street outside the shopping centre. One of the bystanders told Bloemfontein Courant that one of the alleged shooters was in the lift with the victim, while the other two were waiting in the basement parking area.

As soon as the victim stepped outside the lift, a fight ensued and he was subsequently shot.

While Courant’s reporters were waiting at the entrance to the basement, a woman arrived on the scene. She was immediately escorted down to the basement by the police. Minutes later the woman, presumably the wife of the victim, started sobbing uncontrollably.

Courant has the name of the victim, but can’t publish it before it had been confirmed by police.

Meanwhile a police spokesperson told reporters that a statement will be released once more information becomes available. – Zilke Prinsloo and Pieter Delport;
