Mangaung Metro budget might put spotlight on late salary payments

Sparks might fly on Wednesday, 31 May 2017, when the 2017/18 budget of the Mangaung Metro Municipality is tabled during a sitting of the council. This followed after the municipality faced protest action by municipal workers for the late and non-payment of salaries.

Days later municipal employees were still faced with the exact same problem. Workers and councillors only got paid days after payday.

Even though Mangaung Metro spokesperson, Qondile Khedama, said – after a media enquiry by Courant – that the delay was caused by a technical error, the issue is likely to top the agenda in the council sitting today.

EFF councillor, Baba Sebolao, said they were surprised as to why they did not receive their salaries in due time, especially amid a legal strike during which workers complained about this.

Workers also demanded salary increments, the cessation of daily political interference in the administration of the municipality, an end to nepotism, and the absorption of all temporary workers to be appointed permanently.
