Free State Premier Ace Magashule will meet with unemployed nurses on Friday regarding their appointments later this month in various provincial hospitals.
Health MEC, Benny Malakoane, said it has been a long standing issue and Magashule has a plan of action in place which includes amongst others the nurses’ remuneration. Malakoane was speaking at a media briefing in Bloemfontein after a two-day Health Indaba yesterday.
He couldn’t disclose Magashule’s plan but rather emphasized that it will have a positive effect on the department.
“Premier has expressed a wish to meet with the nurses and convey a certain interventions which at the time of the first meeting commitments could not be given in a manner that they will be given this coming Friday. We have always been saying that it is easy to hire people and if we want to hire people who don’t have any expectations of being paid anything then we can fill all the facilities which unfortunately it isn’t possible,” he said.
Magashule who also spoke at the indaba mentioned that the nurses will be hired around Manapo Hospital in Qwaqwa, Bongani in Welkom and the Pelonomi Hospital in Bloemfontein. He congratulated Malakoane for monitoring the department’s overtime system which is saving the department R285 million. The department now only spends R29 million on overtime.
