Newly elected Secretary General (SG) of the ANC, Ace Magashule has said that it his duty as the party’s SG to ensure that it’s resolutions are followed through and implemented. Speaking to PowerFm’s Harja Omarjee on Wednesday, Magashule said “The President has been stressing this issue (of land expropriation without compensation) and the resolutions of the party’s National Conference shall be monitored and implemented. Gone are the days and years when conferences take decisions and resolutions and we don’t implement them. My role as SG is to ensure and monitor implementation of the resolutions made at conference,” Magashule said. Speaking on another issue regarding his appointment as SG and where this leaves him as the ANC Free State’s chairperson and premier, Magashule confirmed that he would be stepping down from both structures. He also said he does not know where rumours of him wanting to occupy both the national and provincial seats come from as the ANC’s constitution is against this. “The ANC constitution is very clear… once you are elected at national, you vacate the position you have,” Magashule said. He also added that vacating office is a process as he would need to consult with lower structures before officially leaves office. “… Once you occupy a position at a higher structure, you automatically resign at the lower structure. You can’t be a leader at both structures- you have to be a leader at one. If you are at the highest level, that’s where you stay,” he added. The controversial Magashule was declared and elected as the party’s SG at Nasrec Centre in Johannesburg in late December last year, after votes had to be recounted as there were allegedly 68 missing votes in the first round of elections.
