The Proteas all-rounder, Ryan McLaren, will be available for this former team, the VKB Knights, again this season. This will mean the Knights squad will now have five Proteas in their ranks with McLaren, Rilee Rossouw, Marchandt de Lange, Robin Peterson and David Miller, who will join the team in September.
Furthermore, the team’s new captain, Theunis de Bruyn, who is joining from the Titans, is a regular in the South African A setup. McLaren’s return is a massive boost for the Knights but will give their selectors sleepless nights due to quota requirements.
McLaren told Courant that he is delighted to return to the Knights, but indicated that he would only be used when the need arises.
“There’s nothing concrete that has been arranged thus far. At this stage it’s a case of ‘I’ll be used when really needed’.
“There are a lot of big players around now and it’s exciting to see guys like David Miller, Robin Petersen, Marchandt de Lange and Theunis de Bruyn around.
“I think they are going to make a big difference.”
McLaren is currently playing his cricket for the English county side, Hampshire, where he is the leading wicket taker in domestic unlimited over cricket. He is also the second leading wicket taker in limited over cricket, despite only having played three matches. – MORGAN PIEK
