Local filmmaker receives recognition for documentary

A story about courage, hope and resilience was turned into a documentary to educate people about the complexities of people living with disabilities.

Glow in the Dark, directed and produced by Mpho Tau, who is the founder and director at 1976 Films in Bloemfontein, has received recognition at two film festivals, the Raw Film Festival in Cape Town and the Mpumalanga International Film Festival in Secunda.

Speaking on this achievement, Tau highlighted that it reinforces that 1976 Films is on the right path.

“For the local film scene, it means that our stories matter and can be consumed beyond the Free State,” he said.

Tau, who received mentorship for the documentary from Bolobathaba Multimedia, a company based in Limpopo, mentioned that it is a great honour for this film to have been selected.

“It brings great joy in my heart, our desire is for this film to reach far and wide, including people living with disabilities,” he expressed.

He also mentioned that by following their page on Facebook and Instagram (1976 Films), aspiring filmmakers can stay updated on projects, job opportunities or public screenings. “Film and the arts are a bedrock of any society or community, as such it is important to preserve and encourage participation in these medium/s,” Tau concluded.
