A truck coming from a farm in Bloemfontein, was on its way to the northern dumping site when the waste loaded at the back caught fire. The people inside the truck realised what was happening when they took the Nelson Mandela turn off onto the road leading to Johannesburg. The Mangaung Fire Department was called out to come and extinguish fire and to ensure that the fire does not spread.
A senior officer from the Mangaung Fire Department, Judith Scheepers, told Bloemfontein Courant that they suspect that someone had flicked a cigarette bud onto the load and that is what caused the fire. The men on and inside the truck panicked and tried to throw off the waste at the back of the truck in the open veld next to the road. ”Luckily no one was injured and the truck itself made it without any damage.’’
Scheepers said that we are now in the season when fires are more common. The fire department asks people to be more careful when dealing with anything that could start a fire.
