Let police investigate – Mathunjwa

Owen Kock

Bloemfontein. – The president of the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu) says the attack on a man near Anglo American Platinum mine near Rustenburg, North West, should in no way be linked to an ongoing strike by Amcu members.

Joseph Mathunjwa was commenting after a group of people assaulted a man and set his car alight near the Sondela informal settlement on Monday. Sondela is near Amplats’ Khuseleka shaft one in Rustenburg where Amcu members have been striking since Friday over the company’s plans to retrench 3 300 workers. Mathunjwa says the police should be left to investigate the matter.

"We belive our strike is a peaceful strike. If there’s anything that is wrong then it’s for the police to investigate. I cannot say it’s Amcu strikers. Remember, this strikes does have a community effect because we are closing down shafts.

"The community is also part of those demonstrating because their livelyhood has been taken away from them and I’m not suggesting it’s the community, but that’s the reason I’m saying it should be left to the police to investifate such things," Mathunjwa said.
