The Department of Water & Sanitation has announced that the closure of the Lesotho Highland Tunnel for planned maintenance from 1 October to 31 March 2025 will impact water users within the Integrated Vaal River System (IVRS).
This shutdown, jointly conducted by the Lesotho Highlands Development Agency (LHDA) and Trans Caledon Tunnel Authority (TCTA), is essential for extensive maintenance and repairs in the tunnels, ensuring optimal water supply.
The Lesotho Highland Water Project tunnel consists of a transfer tunnel linking the Katse Dam with the Muela Power Station and the Muela Dam, as well as a delivery tunnel connecting the Muela Dam with the Ash River Outfall Works between Clarens and Bethlehem.
Affected regions include the Vaal River System, users along the Liebenbergsvlei River, and the Mafube, Nketoana, and Dihlabeng Local Municipalities in the Free State. The Department of Water and Sanitation is actively engaging with these municipalities, implementing plans to sustain water supply during the shutdown. However, it is crucial to note that the closure will impact water availability from the rivers.
To facilitate effective planning, the Department urges all water users to be aware of this situation well in advance. Communities along the affected areas are encouraged to use water sparingly during this period. Cooperation is essential in mitigating the effects of the temporary disruption to ensure a reliable water supply for the designated period.
