Leaping into leap day

A leap day only comes once every four years. Many see it as an extra day to do more and some may see it as just another ordinary day.

Bloemfontein Courant’s News Team took to the streets to hear how the community will be spending this ‘extra day’.

And here is what they had to say:

Juliano Petrella and Dylan van der Merwe.

They will both be working on leap day. “I would rather not be working, but I will be working the extra day this year,” said Petrella.

“I didn’t take much time to think about the fact that it was a leap year,” said Van der Merwe, “but extra time is always valuable.”

Iewers Nice’s Solly Mswenya and Andries Coetzee, alongside Raphael the dog, plan to make a difference in people’s lives this leap day.

“We will look to hire a new guy who has been struggling a lot,” said Mswenya. “He did not have anything, so we will take him in and give him hope.” Coetzee added:

“We’ve had a guy coming to beg here, down and out, and we just decided to give the guy a break.” He added: “Our main thing is to help people, to look out for them.”

“If I could choose my own birthday, I’d choose 29 February because I’ll remain young for a very long time.” Stephnie mentioned that she will also be spending some quality time with her family and her wheelchair-bound sister-in-law.

“I’ll be working on leap day this year but I wish that I could be at home in Cape Town with my family by the sea catching fish and braaing snoek.”

Jaun Dorfling.

He is determined to try something new this leap day. “I think it’s a good idea to try something I haven’t done before,” he said. “I want to go for a massage, I haven’t been for one before.” He also says he will take his wife with if she finds out about his plan.

Thandoe and Ceaser Chirwa.

Ceaser will be working and having a lot of coffee. “I’ll be having a glass of wine to soak in leap day that comes once in a long time. Ceaser hopes that the leap year brings him better business and expansion.
