The South African Under-14 girls’ singles tennis champion, Donna le Roux, will be heading to Egypt next mouth where she will be representing the country in the African Junior Team Championships (AJTC). She has been selected for the Under-14 team to represent South Africa in the Land of the Pharaohs.

Recently, Le Roux gained the South African Junior title in her hometown of Bloemfontein by beating the third-seeded Rune van Wyk 6-2, 6-0 in a one-sided final.

During the national championships in the City of Roses, which was the South African leg of WTA Future Stars series, she earned the right to go and play in the global final in Shenzhen, China, in November this year.

Donna, who is the daughter of the former Free State and Springbok prop, Ollie le Roux, told Bloemfontein Courant that she is excited to represent her country and she will be backing on past experiences to improve her game on the tricky clay courts.

“I’m very excited to be going to Egypt. I think that it’s going to be a new journey. Our team is a really good one and if we play at our best we can do really well in this tournament.

“I’m excited to see the pyramids and everything else because it looks very interesting on Google.

“I’m very thankful to Tennis South Africa for selecting me to go and represent my country in this tournament.

“I’ve already been to another tournament like this when we played in Morocco in 2019. The clay courts are a different surface and it is something new that you have to get used to.

“Playing on the clay courts is really difficult and with the experience I got back then, I think that I can improve and be better player when I play on the courts again.”

Le Roux’s Under-14 teammates for the championships are Yenzokuhle Dladla and Morgan Jordaan.
