Latest technology for library users

LERATO LELIA

State-of-the-art technology will now form part of the attraction to visiting the Bloemfontein Public Library. The library has been closed down since last year September for upgrades and renovations that would improve it to international standards. “The scope of the library usage changed. At first it was just a reading library but then it started becoming a study and a research library. We identified the need to expand,” said Project Manager and Deputy Director of the Motheo District Library Service, Elmari Kruger.

The Bloemfontein public library is one of four legal deposit libraries in South Africa, excluding the Library of Parliament, which receives books that have been published in South Africa according to the Legal Deposit Act. “The first phase of the renovation was for the library to see how it can improve the legal depository. So we removed all the old shelves and put in these new mobile shelves so we can store more copies of the books,” added Kruger.

The latest technology will be implemented both inside the library and as a way of improving security. Part of the study area will have computers with internet access as well as designated areas with free-wifi for library users. “We tried to install the latest technology, there will also be tablets and e-books that people will be able to use,” Kruger explained.

The renovation has a budget of R15 million rand. However, costs have not been set in stone. “We might spend more than that due to the fluctuating building costs,” said Kruger.

The library is also in the process of upgrading and expanding its reading and seating facilities as well as becoming more user friendly for the physically handicapped. It is expected to open for the public in June 2015.
