LHP: a lifestyle and business hub of note

OWNER of the Spitskop Aquarium & Pet Shop situated at the Pretty Gardens Centre, Gail Strachan, referred to the safety of Langenhoven Park and elaborated a bit on the history of the pet shop, which has been in the area for decades. “We bought the pet shop over. It had already been here for 20 years when we bought it over. It is a well-known business. We are just carrying on the legacy. Langenhoven Park is one of the safe areas to come to,” she said. Mani Khan, who runs the New Cell Phone Accessory Shop, said that the business is not as successful as he would like it to be, but said that it is actually not doing too badly. “It is quite safe and there really is no crime. The area can do with more businesses,” he expressed. The manager of Dirtco, Shane Esterhuizen, referred to the tranquil nature of the Bloemfontein suburb. “It is a very peaceful area. You can bring your whole family to the Pretty Gardens Centre, which is where we are situated. We specialise in fishing gear, outdoor equipment, PCP air rifles, knives and various other things you might need for your outdoor adventures,” said Esterhuizen. The Langenhoven Park Vetshop’s Bianca Howard described the Langenhoven Park suburb as a business and lifestyle hub that many

Langenhoven Park is one of the well-established suburbs of the city of Bloemfontein. The residential area is known for its low level of crime and family-orientated shopping centres. More and more business owners are opting to establish themselves in the residential area than before. Bloemfontein Courant spoke to various owners and representatives of some of the business owners in Langenhoven Park to find out why they prefer to be situated in the area and what they think the reasons are for it being the area of choice for consumers and home owners.

Jan Blohm keer jaarliks terug vir ‘n vertoning of twee.

The 5 Oranje Toyota Bloemfontein Knights

Jacques Cloete (Automark Knight, Sales Manager)

Jacques Cloete has been with the Toyota Brand for ten years and a Toyota Knight for nine years. To him the Knights team is the best of the best within the Toyota Brand – “This is Knights’ PHILOSOPHY,” he says.

The Knights Programme represents an elite group of sales professionals who are a valuable asset to both their dealership and Toyota South Africa. They make a significant contribution to the viability and profitability of their dealership while promoting the image of a supreme sales professional and at the same time creating aspirational levels for other Toyota sales professionals. “During the nine years I have been awarded as Automark Knight Sales Manager of the Year in 2012, 2015 and 2016. Part of being a Knight, is being a part of the community. We do different annual fund raisers. Oranje Toyota Bloemfontein has six Knights who are part of the Toyota SA programme. This programme has to be followed on a yearly basis to be able to have the honour of being a Toyota Knight. I am also on the executive committee of Reach for a Dream, one of my main charities,” he says.

Jacques mentions to qualify for this programme you need to meet your sales target, customer service, retention, self-development and social responsibility to be part of the community. These targets are measured throughout the country, so when you get this trophy, you are the Best of the Best. Currently there are only 102 Knights in South Africa.

Charlene du Plessis (Automark Knight)

“To be part of the elite group of salespersons within Toyota South Africa, known as the Toyota Knights, is a rare honour,” says Charlene.

“Earning and keeping this title means that not only do I make a significant contribution as a salesperson to the viability of the dealership by way of profitability, but as part of the salesteam, I promote our image and aspire to be an inspiration to my colleagues. As a Toyota Knight I have responsibilities and duties to set an example of being a balanced professional in the work environment, community and in social and environmental activities, demonstrating to fellow colleagues my product knowledge and outstanding service to customers.”

Johnny Vorster (Toyota Knight)

“Wow, what it means to me is passion, dedication, success and a love for what I am doing, striving to be the best in the business,” Johnny says. in 1999 I became part of Oranje Toyota Bloemfontein. I started at the parts store as a picker for a year or three. Later on I became parts salesmen, but my passion was always cars, so in 2008 I started at the New Vehicle department. I saw there was one guy at the New Cars wearing this jacket with a little horse on it. I asked him about it and he explained to me that it was an elite group of sales professionals and it would take me years to achieve knighthood. I thought about it and said to myself it was not going to take me years, I would make it in one year. I have the passion and drive in me to do it. In 2009 when the applications opened I received the programme and accepted the challenge, which to a rookie like me meant a self-development course, a Toyota skills programme, social responsibility, customer experience, Toyota training in retention and vehicle exhibition.”

“I achieved knighthood for the first time in 2010 (for the year 2009) and since then I have won it in 2013/2014/2015/2016/2017. To me these were the best years of my life. I have sold more than 2000 cars since then. I like being involved in the community. It is nice to give back and it’s not always about the money but about the time you spend with the less fortunate that makes it special.”

Leandre Infanti (Toyota Knight)

Soos die bekende Kiichiro Toyoda gesê het: “Before you say you can’t do something, try it.”

Pieter Norval (Lexus Knight)

“To be nominated as a Lexus Knight is a great honour. It shows that hard work does get recognised, but it is also a great platform from which we can put back into the community, a community that has supported me and Lexus through the years. The Knights, and what we stand for, is about responsibility in our workplace, setting an example to others, delivering a quality service and also to improve ourselves in our business as well as private lives. To be nominated was a great privilege, but now the real work and enjoyment will follow and I am looking forward to the journey.”

Jonathan Stephenson (Dealer Principal)

As a previous Toyota Knight I understand the hard journey that you must go through every year. I was Knighted in 2013 and stayed for three years with the elite group. These Toyota Knights are individuals that need no motivation in life. They motivate themselves, they are goal driven and they are proud of themselves and proud to be part of this brand and this dealership. Well done to all five of you. I hope that 2019 will be a great year for you all. Let’s push forward in getting people to understand the importance of supporting local!

Crime statistics for 2019

JOSEPH Renaud, district coordinator of the AfriForum Neighbourhood Watch, discussed the recent crime statistics in the area. House burglaries account for 81% of all the crimes committed.

The theft of items out of/from motor vehicles and cars was a high percentage while less frequent crimes included common or serious assault, petty theft and business burglaries.

January 2019 saw an increase of 6% (to 53%) compared to the beginning of 2018 while the figure for business burglaries remained the same.

Crime hotspots (streets) are Jan Spies 33%; Karl Kielblock 15%; NP Van WykLouw 15%; Anna Neethling-Pohl7%; Elias Motsoaledi 7%; Maretha Maartens 7%. Places are: Townhouses 56%; Houses 30%; Business parking areas 7%; ATM facilities 4%; Med. institution/Pharmacy 4%; Supermarket 4%.

Days of the week which recorded high instances of crime are Thursdays, with Saturdays the lowest, and time of day in which crimes are likely to occur is between 06:00 – 09:00.

Renaud noted that perpetrators are more likely to observe their target for days before they act. “We work closely with the police (the Bainsvlei SAPS and the Park Road SAPS), we have WhatsApp groups and we are on standby. We have a common goal of fighting crime. We try to be there for the community, but we are not trying to take over from the police,” he said.

Parkrun going from strength to strength

EVERY Saturday hundreds of residents, young and old, take part in the 5-km long Langenhoven Parkrun. Since the parkrun began it has been attracting about 30 new members each week.

Participants are encouraged to run at their own pace as their only competition is the clock.

According to Bruce Fordyce, CEO of Parkrun South Africa, one of the highlights of the event has been the number of residents who have taken part. He recalled the launch of the first run. “One of my favourite highlights is looking back at the view from the top of Langenhoven Hill, nicknamed “Kilimanjaro”. The sight of a solid stream of brightly coloured T-shirts streaming along for over a kilometre is one I will never forget,” said Fordyce.

“The highlights of the parkrun have been the immediate success we have had in attracting so many members of the community to participate. It has made a great impact on the community. The sight of over 1000 participants running and walking at the launch of the parkrun is something to be remembered by all,” he added.

Every Saturday morning at 7:00 am, at the corner of Du Plessis and Koppie Roads, Langenhoven Park, tackie-wearing residents take part in the 5-km run. While some of the people who take part are avid runners, others join the run for the pure enjoyment of fresh air, community participation. “The growth at Langenhoven Parkrun has been solid. There were 1000 people at the first run but numbers have remained consistent and there are often more than 500 people taking part. There are now over 4000 registered members of Langenhoven Parkrun and 20 – 30 new members join each week,” stated Fordyce.

The weekly event is run by volunteers who record the finishing times of participants. “All our parkruns are organised by volunteers and these remarkable people ensure the smooth running of our parkruns. The organisation faces occasional challenges but these are usually weather-related. Last week Langenhoven Parkrun had to be cancelled because of the rain and widespread flooding,” said Fordyce.

To join in the fun, you can register at www.parkrun.co.za where you will be able to print a special barcode to use at every run.
