SABRINA DEAN – The community of the University of the Free State is once again reeling in shock, this time at news of the brutal murder of a popular lecturer.
According to a report in Volksblad, the body of 27-year-old Lehlohonolo Mathengtheng was found in a pool of blood in his apartment in King Edward street on Sunday. His throat was allegedly slit and there was blood throughout the two-bedroom flat.
Mathengtheng, a lecturer in the university’s Department of Medical Microbiology and Virology, was last seen alive on Friday. UFS spokesperson Lacea Loader says it is an extremely difficult time for the University. "He was a promising young academic who was published quite widely and also received numerous research awards," she says.
"It’s terrible for us to lose a lecturer. as well as a PHD student. Our thoghts go out to his family, colleagues and friends during this terrible time."
Loader says details of a memorial service will be made available soon.
Police are investigating a case of murder.
