Kovies beat Limpopo to open their account

Bloemfontein – The Kovies football team picked up their first win of the 2014 Varsity Football on Monday night when they beat Limpopo 2-0 at Shimla Park in Bloemfontein.

The University of Free State side didn’t disappoint their home fans by scoring two second half goals to seal the victory.

Lehlohonolo Mokoena and Jay Jay Groenewald were the two men to find the back of the net, to hand the Bloemfontein outfit all three points.

The result sees them move to third on the log, following their 1-0 defeat to Tuks in the opening round.

Limpopo tested Kovsies goalkeeper Serasengoe Moodie with a couple of long range efforts. However, Harold Ndhlovu in the visitors goal also had his work cut to prevent the opening score as game headed into the half-time break goalless.

Relentless pressure by Godfrey Tenoffs’ men eventually saw Mokoena break the shackles at the University of the Free States’ campus.

Groenewald, who came on as a replacement striker, controlled the ball well and finished with his left foot to doubles the sides lead.

22-Year-old, Jarred Meyer, who is playing in his second season of Varsity Football for Kovies, was named as Man of the Match.

Monday nights other results saw Tuks beat UCT 2-1 in Cape Town, UJ stun NMMU 3-0 in Johannesburg, and the North West University sink UWC 1-0 in Mafikeng.
